By having my base albedo color be blonde I can change the hair color while retaining some of the extra detail from the albedo texture. Here are a few color variants.

The layers were very straightforward for this hairdo. The most important thing for me was being able to toggle the strips on & off to fix things with the base layer.

I'm testing out rendering in UE4, starting with haircards and this messy hairdo.
I used only Arnold in Maya and Photoshop to get all my required textures, so iterating or changing the haircard properties and updating the textures is a fast process. 1024 x 2048 maps. 14990 tris.
